AN ADVENT URBAN RETREAT in Glasgow
Leonard Cohen started his career as a poet, and — almost accidentally — became known as a singer. His serious lyrics and gravelly voice often hid a humour and irony, and his lyrics betray a spirituality that was at once agnostic and devout. He died a few days after releasing You Want It Darker, an album that brought regret, romance, eros and entertainment together in seamless melodies underpinned by extraordinary harmonies and musicianship.
During this retreat, we will explore some of the lyrics and some of the life of Cohen, looking at his Jewish heritage, his appropriation of liturgy, his engagement with poetic form and his unflinching honesty in the face of a life lived with art and pain.
